Osimhen Breaks Nigeria’s 24 Years Duck At 2023 CAF Awards

He becomes the first Nigerian to win the award after Kanu Nwankwo last scooped it in 1999, 24 years ago.

Super Eagles and Napoli Super star, Victor Osimhen has been named 2023 CAF African Player of the Year in Morocco on Monday night.

 

The Napoli forward enjoyed a scintillating year for club and country, he fought off fierce competition from Achraf Hakimi and Mohammed Salah to win the prestigious award.

He becomes the first Nigerian to win the award after Kanu Nwankwo last scooped it in 1999, 24 years ago.

 

Last season, Osimhen led Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years with a series of match-winning performances.

He also won the Serie A top scorer award with 26 goals in 32 games to become the first African to achieve the feat.

The 24-year-old also finished as the top scorer in the Nations Cup qualifiers with 10 goals to help the Super Eagles book a place in the competition next year.

 

Osimhen is the first player to win African Player of the Year awards at both the junior and senior levels now.

Osimhen has now joined the enviable list of Nigerian players to win the coveted prize, joining the likes of Nwankwo Kanu, Rashidi Yekini, Emmanuel Amuneke, and Victor Ikpeba.

 

He also finished 8th in the 2023 Ballon d’Or, the highest-ever finish by a Nigerian.
