Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun says the Olokola Deep Sea Port, which is set to begin construction in the Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, will be one of the largest in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Governor Abiodun stated this at the commissioning of the Tam Balogun Road, Stadium Road and Luba Road projects in Ijebu-Ode, totalling six kilometres.
The Governor said his administration is committed to the Olokola deep sea port and dismissed speculations that he intends to abandon the project.
“We are working tirelessly on our port project. The Deep Sea Port is on course, and Ogun State will have one of the deepest and longest ports in Sub-Saharan Africa, if not the entire continent.
“It will boast the longest berth in Sub-Saharan Africa. Very soon, we will unveil full details of the project,” he said.
Governor Abiodun also stressed his determination to make Ogun State an oil-producing State, announcing that drilling activities for commercial oil production have commenced at the oil-rich Eba Island in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.
“During my campaign, I promised that Ogun State would become an oil-producing state under my administration. The oil we are now working to establish in commercial quantities has always been here. Previous administrations had the opportunity, but it is under my tenure that meaningful progress is being made,” he stated.
Governor Abiodun, who is the Ogun East Senatorial Candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, highlighted his other landmark projects in Ogun East, including his persistent lobbying of the federal government to reconstruct the Sagamu/Ijebu-Ode/Ore/Benin expressway, a project which is underway.
On the Gateway International Airport project, Governor Abiodun said his administration is the first in Nigeria to “start, finish, and operationalise an airport”. He said the facility has commenced full operations with recent Hajj flights conveying Muslim pilgrims to and from Saudi Arabia.
Governor Abiodun further noted his contributions to the federal government’s establishment of an Inland Dry Port along the Ijebu-Ode/Epe Expressway, which is expected to be connected with an upcoming railway project along the corridor.
The Governor added that he was at the forefront of the federal takeover of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, as Ogun East lacked a federal tertiary educational institution.
Governor Abiodun also recalled how he facilitated the federal government’s takeover of the Oba Sikiru Adetona School of Governance Studies, which has since been incorporated into the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).
